Progressive Phonics Word Building Kit (Early Elementary)

The Progressive Phonics & Word Building Kit – Grades 1–2 includes seven reusable Sound Box Learning Mats that progress from foundational CVC words to more advanced phonics and spelling patterns. Each mat builds upon previously learned skills, providing meaningful practice as children become more confident readers and spellers.

Children select a vocabulary picture card, identify the word, and segment it into individual sounds. Using the sound boxes, they build or write the word sound-by-sound, then blend the sounds together to read the complete word. Color-coded touch points and targeted practice encourage children to hear, map, build, write, and read words using a structured, multisensory routine.

This intentional practice supports orthographic mapping, helping children connect sounds to letters and spelling patterns so words can become stored in long-term memory for increasingly automatic reading and spelling.

Seven Progressive Phonics Skills

The kit includes one reusable Learning Mat for each skill:

• Mat 1 – CVC Words: Short-vowel consonant-vowel-consonant words
• Mat 2 – CVCe Words: Long-vowel words with final silent e
• Mat 3 – CCVC Words: Beginning consonant blends
• Mat 4 – CVCC Words: Ending consonant patterns and rimes
• Mat 5 – Vowel Teams: Common two-letter vowel patterns
• Mat 6 – _dge Words: Words ending with the /j/ sound spelled dge
• Mat 7 – R-Controlled Vowels: Practice with ar, or, ir, er, and ur

Children can progress through the mats in order or use individual mats to reinforce the phonics skills they are currently learning in school or through their homeschool curriculum.
