Successive Blending
A Simple Strategy for CVC Word Mastery

Have you heard of successive blending but unsure of how to use it? It’s a powerful phonics strategy that supports emerging and struggling readers by easing the process of sounding out words.
Here’s how it works:
- Start by identifying individual sounds.
- Blend the first two sounds.
- Add the next sound.
- Continue until the whole word is read.
For example, with cat: /c/ + /a/ = /ca/, then /ca/ + /t/ = cat!
This technique reduces cognitive overload and boosts reading confidence.
We’ve created hands-on resources to make this strategy even easier to implement, whether at home or in the classroom.
